What is Green Energy? A Step Towards a Better Future By Dr. Manoj Bhardwaj When we think about the future, one thing we cannot ignore is energy. From our homes and offices to industries, agriculture and transportation, almost everything around us depends on energy. But have we ever stopped to think about where this energy comes from and what impact it has on our environment? This is where Green Energy becomes important. For me, green energy is not just a technical term. It represents a change in the way we think about development. We need energy for economic growth, but at the same time, we need a clean and healthy environment for future generations. What is Green Energy? In simple words, green energy is energy produced from natural sources with very little impact on the environment. The sun provides solar energy, wind can generate electricity, flowing water can produce hydropower, and organic waste can be converted into biogas and useful energy. These sources are naturally available and can help reduce our dependence on conventional fuels such as coal, petrol and diesel. Why Do We Need Green Energy? Our energy requirements are increasing every year. Cities are growing, industries are expanding and transportation is changing rapidly. At the same time, problems such as air pollution, climate change and increasing temperatures are becoming serious concerns. This raises an important question: Can we continue to develop without damaging the environment? I believe we can, but we need to change the way we produce and use energy. Green energy provides us with an opportunity to achieve a better balance between development and environmental responsibility. India's Green Energy Opportunity India has enormous potential in renewable energy, especially solar energy. We receive sunlight for a large part of the year, making solar power suitable for homes, industries, institutions and agriculture. However, technology alone cannot create this transformation. We also need people who understand how to install, operate and maintain these systems. This is why I strongly believe that green energy and skill development must go together. Green Energy and New Employment Opportunities The growth of green energy is also creating new career opportunities. The renewable energy sector requires engineers, technicians, electricians, maintenance professionals, project managers and entrepreneurs. New opportunities are also developing in areas such as electric vehicles, battery technology, energy storage, biogas, biofuels and green hydrogen. For India's young population, this can become a major source of employment and entrepreneurship. In my opinion, preparing our youth with the right technical skills is just as important as developing the technology itself. Green Energy and Electric Vehicles My academic and professional interest in electric and hybrid vehicles has made me particularly interested in the connection between clean energy and transportation. Electric vehicles can reduce our dependence on petrol and diesel. But their environmental benefit becomes even greater when the electricity used for charging comes from renewable sources. This creates a connected ecosystem: Renewable Energy → Clean Electricity → Energy Storage → Electric Mobility Therefore, the future of transportation cannot be separated from the future of energy. There Are Still Challenges Green energy is not without challenges. Solar and wind power depend on natural conditions, while energy storage, infrastructure, investment and skilled manpower remain important areas requiring attention. We should therefore adopt green energy through proper planning, research and practical implementation, rather than treating it simply as a trend. My Perspective As a Mechanical Engineer and researcher, I believe that the transition towards green energy is one of the most important technological changes taking place today. But technology alone will not be enough. We need skilled people, innovation and responsible implementation. Educational institutions should prepare students for emerging technologies, industries should invest in training, and young professionals should explore the new opportunities being created by the green economy. Green energy can help us achieve more than environmental protection. It can create new industries, new skills, new businesses and new employment opportunities. Looking Towards the Future The energy sector is changing rapidly. Solar energy is expanding, electric vehicles are becoming more common, battery technology is developing, and technologies such as green hydrogen, biogas and biofuels are gaining attention. The question is no longer whether the energy sector will change. The real question is how well we prepare ourselves for that change. For me, green energy represents a combination of technology, sustainability and human development. If we can bring these three together, India can move towards a cleaner environment, stronger industries and better opportunities for its young generation. Green energy is not only about producing cleaner power. It is about creating a cleaner, smarter and more sustainable future.
